Three Michigan systems will retrofit their buses with clean technology, thanks to funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Bay Metro, Battle Creek Transit, and Saginaw Transit Authority Regional Services will use mini-hybrid thermal conversion kits to extend vehicle life and increase fuel efficiency. “It will help reduce diesel particulate emissions into the environment, keeping the air we breathe cleaner,” said Bay Metro general manager Mike Stoner, speaking about the new system in a statement. “Our day-to-day operating costs will be reduced because of fuel savings. Plus, we’ll be able to operate our older buses for a longer period, which will reduce long-term replacement costs. And, it gives us an opportunity to be on the cutting edge of a new technology, something small organizations like Bay Metro Transit rarely have the opportunity to do.” Engineered Machined Products (EMP) makes the mini-hybrid system.
