New York taxi drivers overcharge passengers by millions

New York City taxi drivers overcharged passengers by more than $8 million over the past two years. After reviewing GPS data from the taxis, the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission determined that drivers switched the meter from the approved city rate to the higher suburban rate for 1.8 million trips.  To help address the problem, the commission plans to install a system that posts an alert on the back-seat television screen when the driver switches the meter to the higher rate.
