New York City kicked off its taxi-sharing program today, although passengers and drivers were slow to take advantage. “We are not expecting thousands of passengers or cabbies to be here on the first day or first couple of days,” said Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Matthew Daus, who took the inaugural ride this morning. Passengers were cautiously optimistic about the prospect of sharing a taxi ride with a stranger: “I’m okay with that,” one rider told NY1. “I mean, obviously if they don’t look friendly, then maybe I’d pass, but I’m sure most of the time, it’s fine.” And while the TLC said that drivers will earn more by carrying multiple passengers, some were not so sure.
