The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will add software on 182 rail cars to prevent trains from rolling backwards when operating in manual mode. The $813,000 software upgrade will bring Metro into compliance with a National Transportation Safety Board recommendation. In addition, Metro will spend $2.6 million to repair the door control units on 546 rail cars to enhance passenger safety when the trains are operating in automatic mode.
