New York City Transit is testing alternative approaches to providing countdown information to subway riders using existing infrastructure. Six stations will provide audio updates, and four will use existing signs as well. Although NYC Transit plans to provide countdown information across the subway system, over 200 stations were not included in the upgrade for budget reasons, according to the New York Daily News. “This is another part of the initiative to offer real time train arrival information to our customers, but here we are going about it in a different manner using existing infrastructure rather than waiting for the installation of an entirely new communications system,” said NYC Transit president Thomas F. Prendergast in a press release. Link to full story in the New York Daily News.
