Can sails help ferries save fuel?

A California start-up plans to build ferries with sails that take advantage of the San Francisco Bay’s strong winds to save fuel. The rigid sails would be made of carbon composite materials and resemble aircraft wings; ferries would still use engines but could realize fuel savings of 40%.  “Especially with the Bay Area and the amount of wind we have, it’s something that really clicks with people,” said Jay Gardner of Wind+Wing Technologies. “Once you get past the initial resistance and start showing them the studies we’ve developed, the light comes on.” Financing is not yet in place, but plans call for a demonstration model next year. Link to full story in the San Francisco Chronicle.
