TransLink’s goal within reach

After 16 years, TransLink is moving toward its goal of providing one card for all 24 transit agencies in the San Francisco (CA) Bay Area. The smart card is already operational on five systems, which together carry 80-85% of the region’s ridership: San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, Bay Area Rapid Transit, AC Transit, Caltrain, and Golden Gate Transit.  Users have been slow to adopt the card, however; about 37,000 riders a day used the card in August, much lower from the long-term goal of 700,000 riders.  “Even though the system is up and running, the agencies are soft launching. They’re not yet marketing the program to the public in an aggressive manner,” said Jake Avidon, TransLink senior program coordinator for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
