Projects in California, Florida, and the Midwest were among the big winners in the competition for $8 billion in federal funding for high-speed rail. Speaking in Florida yesterday, President Barack Obama announced awards to projects in 31 states and the District of Columbia for a combination of corridor projects and improvements to existing infrastructure. Major investments included $2.25 billion to California to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles, $1.25 billion to Florida for the Tampa – Orlando corridor, and a series of projects to better connect Chicago (IL) with Madison/Milwaukee (WI), St. Louis (MO), and Detroit (MI).
