Google is launching a new feature that will automatically add text captions to many of the videos on YouTube, marking a major step toward making the service more accessible to deaf and hearing-impaired viewers. YouTube is initially applying the speech-recognition technology to only a few channels, most of which focus on educational content, with a broader roll-out to follow as the technology improves. Google is also improving its existing manual captioning service. Users can now upload a text file with the words spoken in the video; Google match the written text to spoken words.
