Can road trains turn highways into mass transit?

by Susan on November 11, 2009

European researchers are exploring the potential for “road trains” — groups of cars with similar destinations that are linked by telematics. A navigation system would communicate with a lead vehicles, controlling acceleration and steering; the folloiwng vehicles would be autolinked to the actions of the lead car, allowing the drivers to send text messages or eat breakfast, according to Autopia. The project is part of the EU’s  Safe Road Trains for the Environment initiative. While the road trains are expected to improve fuel efficiency and safety, they do not appear to be designed to increase vehicle occupancy. Link to full story in Autopia.
