To-A-T is a new iPhone application that tells Boston transit riders where the closest stop is and when the next bus or train will arrive. The app uses the phone’s GPS feature, in combination with publicly available schedule data from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. “The beauty of releasing the data is it frees us from having to develop the applications ourselves,” said Chris Dempsey, an assistant secretary in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation. “That’s expensive and something that we’re not very good at.” Instead, the state is sponsoring a competition for new applications and a day-long conference on November 14.
