In response to rising suicide rates, some Japanese railway operators have installed special lights on station platforms to create a calming atmosphere for their passengers. East Japan Railway Company added blue LED lights at in 20 stations on Tokyo’s Yamanote Line. Keihin Electric Express Railway Company also installed blue lights at two stations. “We know there is no scientific proof that blue lights will help deter suicides,” said Keihin spokesman Osamu Okawa. “But if blue has a soothing effect on the mind, we want to try it to save lives.” Link to full story in San Francisco Chronicle.
