Metrolink, the southern California commuter rail operator, has added automatic train stop systems at 49 additional locations. ATS systems install magnetic inductors at curves or locations where trains are required to change speed. The system sounds an alert and automatically applies the brakes if the engineer does not respond within eight seconds. Metrolink plans to install positive train control on all its trains by 2012.
