How do you navigate?

by Susan on October 27, 2009

In Human Transit, Jarrett Walker writes about the science of navigation in relation to transit mapping options. People navigate in different ways. At one end of the spectrum are spatial navigators, who essentially create mental maps to guide themselves. Narrative navigators form the other extreme; they are more comfortable following verbal directions. He asks whether what he calls the “low information content of many published transit maps” results from a “mutual incomprehension” between the planners who develop the routes (presumably spatial navigators) and the marketers who create the maps (whom he speculates are narrative navigators).  Link to full story in Human Transit.
