The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority will install a centralized system to control its third-rail heaters. Funded with a $2 million federal TIGGER grant, the project will enable the MTA to monitor the heaters remotely and turn them on and off based on weather conditions. To prevent icing, the MTA currently activates the heaters in the fall and turns them off in the spring. The agency expects to save $1.6 million a year in energy costs. Link to press release from MTA.
