To ease the transition to its new smart-card system, Miami-Dade Transit began distributing free EASY cards last week. System launch is scheduled for October 1, but fareboxes and gates are already operational. The new fare system offers a daily pass option: “For just $5, passengers can load the card or ticket with a daily pass good for unlimited rides on Metrobus and Metrorail for the entire day,” said MDT Director Harpal S. Kapoor. “This option is not available under the existing system.” Passengers will be able to add value to the contactless cards at fare vending machines, at sales outlets, by telephone, or online. After the free card giveaway ends October 16, an unloaded EASY card will cost $2. Link to full story in The Miami Herald.
