Shortly after Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons announced a $45 million grant to study a magnetic levitation rail option between Las Vegas and Anaheim (CA), the Federal Railroad Administration issued a denial. “The Federal Railroad Administration has made neither an award nor an announcement with regard to funding for maglev development in Nevada,” an agency spokesman said. While acknowledging that the funds are not yet in hand, a spokesman for governor was quoted in the Las Vegas Journal-Review saying, “The package isn’t going to arrive until next week, but this deal is done.” The confusion, which had “Nevada political and transportation circles buzzing,” according to the Las Vegas Sun, appears to reflect a political feud between the governor and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The senator switched his support earlier this year from maglev to the DesertXpress, a more conventional high-speed rail option. Link to full story in Las Vegas Sun.
