GIS is the big winner in push for open government

In Government Technology, Tod Newcombe writes about last week’s Gov 2.0 Summit and the increasing number of mash-ups using government-supplied geospatial data. Examples range from Virtual Alabama, which integrated multiple datasets into a statewide inventory of three-dimensional images, to the hyper-local news feed EveryBlock. “The math is simple,” Newcombe writes.  “According to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget’s Federal Enterprise Architecture framework, 74 percent of government data is location based. At the state and local level, the number is even higher: 80 percent, according to several organizations and publications.” Link to full story in Government Technology.
