Car-sharing fits the bill in Champaign-Urbana

In January, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, in partnership with the University of Illinois and the two cities, brought the  Zipcar car-sharing program to Champaign and Urbana.  Eight cars are available in the two cities, and the program already has 300 members. “We are gaining members every day,” said Jay Rank, a transportation analyst at the MTD. “I expect it to grow a lot when the students get back to town.” The partner agencies guarantee $1,500 in revenue per month to Zipcar. “The more it’s used, the less we owe,” Rank said.
