Transit agencies are going green

by Susan on August 4, 2009

The August 3 issue of Passenger Transport highlights activities that transit agencies have taken to reduce their carbon footprint — and to save costs. Some examples:

  • The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CA) is using solar panels at four of its facilities and operates the nation’s largest CNG-powered bus fleet.
  • Foothill Transit in West Covina (CA) will launch an electric bus demonstration project in 2010.  The lightweight vehicle will use a lithium-ion battery that can be charged en route at special docking stations that employ renewable energy sources (e.g., hydroelectric, solar, wind, or tidal).
  • In San Antonio (TX), VIA Metropolitan Transit is using wind-generated electricity for all its power needs. The transition from coal-fired power plants is equivalent to removing 1,325 cars from the road.

“There’s no debate,” writes Susan R. Paisner. “Green is the way to go.”  Link to related stories in Passenger Transport.
