Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new type of barcode. The so-called Bokode is tiny, just three centimeters across, but contains thousands of bits of information. Although Bokodes now require a lens an built-in LED light source, the researchers hope to make future versions easier to read. “We’re trying to make it nearly invisible, but at the same time easy to read with a standard camera, even a mobile phone camera,” said MIT’s Ankit Mohan. The team envisions multiple consumer and business applications for Bokodes, including replacing RFID tags. Link to MIT press release.
