The track circuit that apparently contributed to last month’s Metrorail crash had been malfunctioning intermittently since December 2007, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Officials have already determined that the circuit’s performance deteriorated further in the days before the accident. According to The Washington Post, NTSB has not determined whether knowledge of these previous problems could have prevented the accident and investigators are reviewing maintenance and operations records to see whether Metro officials were aware of any past issues with this circuit. In a related story, Metro plans work with ARINC, a Maryland-based transportation communications and engineering systems firm, to design a real-time backup for its automatic train control system. Link to full story in The Washington Post.
