The motor pool has gone high-tech. Thanks to the DC Fleet Share program, Washington, D.C., employees can reserve a city car online and use a special access card to unlock the vehicle. Using Zipcar‘s FastFleet platform, the district piloted the program in October 2008 with 29 vehicles at four sites. The program now has 58 vehicles at eight locations; almost all are hybrids or use alternative fuel. Thanks to the program’s efficiencies, the city has eliminated 360 vehicles from its fleet at a savings of more than $1 million a year. Link to full story in Government Technology.
