UTA’s smart cards: A look back

by Susan on July 6, 2009

A story in Government Technology highlights the Utah Transit Authority‘s contactless smart-card system, from planning to implementation. UTA uses an open system, allowing customers to pay with company- or school-issued transit passes, as well as contactless credit and debit cards. Besides streamlining the boarding process, the system collects information that supports UTA’s planning efforts. “We’ve asked everyone to both tap on and tap off, which gives us information about where people board, where they get off,” said Craig Roberts, UTA manager of technology program development. “We will be able to have planning data that shows us complete trips people are making within the system, and that is really valuable to us.” Link to full story in Government Technology.
