Société de transport de Montréal (QC) has hired 25 additional inspectors to cut down on fare evasion. Armed with portable card readers, inspectors will be able to issue hefty fines — up to $500 — to riders who did not pay their fares. The STM estimates that the agency loses up to $20 million annually from fraud. “All it does is add irritants,” said Normand Parisien, executive director of Transport 2000 Quebec. “People don’t want to be bothered by someone else after they’ve paid the fare.” Link to full story in The Gazette.
