Harry Reid pulls support for maglev train

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid has dropped his support for a magnetic levitation train between Las Vegas (NV) and the Los Angeles area (CA). Instead, according to The Huffington Post, Reid has shifted his support to a competing diesel-electric proposal. The DesertXpress train would run between Las Vegas and the California desert town of Victorville, about a 90-minute drive from Los Angeles. The project is expected to cost $5 billion, compared to $12 billion for maglev, and rely largely on private funding.  Maglev proponents point out that the DesertXpress does not serve southern California’s major cities and would not reach the projected maglev speed of 300 miles per hour. Link to full story in The Huffington Post.
