Strangers may soon share taxis in New York

May 29, 2009

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission plans to introduce two pilot programs that would allow people to share taxi rides, especially during peak periods. One proposal would create “sharecabs” — taxis that individuals with the same general destination could share.  Meters would calculate fares separately for each passenger, discounting the mileage and waiting time by 50%.  A second proposal would create a jitney-like service, where cabs would travel in a defined corridor during the morning peak.  Passengers would board at a designated location and pay a flat fare; drop-off would be anywhere along the specified travel corridor.
