Air-fueled battery could store 10 times more power

Researchers at the University of St. Andrews, in Scotland, are exploring a new battery design that could be used to power anything from cell phones to cars.  Instead of a lithium cobalt electrode, the new battery would have a porous carbon electrode. This design allows lithium ions and electrons in the cell to react with oxygen.  “The key is to use oxygen in the air as a reagent, rather than carry the necessary chemicals around inside the battery,” said professor Peter Bruce.
