King County (WA) is leading an effort to transform the Seattle area into a hub for green-vehicle technology. The county’s Department of Transportation is developing public-partnerships to bring hybrid-electric technology to the area and has applied for grants from the U.S. Department of Energy to bring the following:
- Several hundred additional plug-in vehicle charging stations across the county, including transit facilities
- Two innovative “battery exchange” stations in King County.
- New plug-in hybrid electric minibuses to serve Metro paratransit customers who require specialized public transportation services; and
- A fleet of all-electric vehicles for use in the county’s vanshare and motor pool programs.
