RTD alarm system to detect trouble on light-rail tracks

The Denver (CO) Regional Transit District plans to use federal stimulus funds to install a system that would alert light-rail cars if a freight train derails in the corridor.  In two recent incidents, derailed freight cars affected RTD light-rail operations; at their closest, the freight and light-rail tracks are only 16 feet apart.  RTD is evaluating three options for an intrusion detection system: underground sensors, an electronic fence, and microwave transmissions.
