Subway plans could signal end of the line for train drivers

The Toronto Transit Commission will introduce automatic train control on the Yonge-University subway line.  The computerized system will allow trains to operate closer together, increasing capacity by 35-50 percent.  While the ATC would allow the line to run without drivers, TTC has not made that decision yet.   “We have not made any decision to go driverless.”  said TTC chief general manager Gary Webster. ” But we know if you invest this kind of money in an ATC system, and all the ATC systems around the world are designed to be driverless, it just makes sense that when we procure a system it will be designed to go driverless.”  Link to full story in The Toronto Star.
