New York “robo train” pulls into the station

Starting today, a computerized signal system will control NYC Transit‘s Manhattan – Brooklyn L train.

Communications Based Train Control will enable NYC Transit to run trains closer together and more frequently than the current antiquated signal system allows.  The technology is the agency’s best hope of relieving overcrowding across the system and handling future population growth, officials have said.

The system will intially be deployed during off-peak periods, and train operators will be onboard to take over the controls in case of emergency. Link to full story in New York Daily News.
