New website offers information about emerging transit technology

The Transit Wire provides information on state-of-the-art technologies used in the public transportation industry. Our goal is to present timely information of use to transit properties, government agencies, researchers, consultants, and vendors.

February 16, 2009 – TheTransitWire.com is a new online source of information about emerging technologies and their applications throughout a transit organization.

“As transit agencies grapple with new issues like safety, security and sustainability, TheTransitWire.com can provide the information they need to deploy, manage and leverage new technologies,” said publisher Robert Brodesky, Director of Transportation and Security at URS Corporation.

Features include news updates, events calendar, vendor directory, and industry links – all of which can help transit professionals stay up-to-date about developments in this rapidly evolving field. The result is a clearinghouse of information that can inform decision-making about investments in all aspects of transit technology.

Stories are drawn from daily newspapers, trade publications, and popular electronic magazines and cover all aspects of new technology.  TheTransitWire.com currently includes stories on sustainability, communications, customer information, fares and revenue, safety and security, organizational development, policy and research.  Recent posts have focused on trends as diverse as new sources of alternative fuel – from sugar cane to cooking oil – along with a catenary-free tram, shock absorbers that harness energy, and a device that can alert passengers with disabilities when their bus stop is approaching.

In the first few months of operation the site has attracted new and returning visitors from around the globe.  Besides visitors from the U.S., hits have been logged from 27 countries/territories including Australia, Switzerland, Canada, Greece, India, Spain, Iran, and France.  “And just as transit agencies are using new social media tools to communicate with their customers, TheTransitWire.com now has its own Facebook page,” said editor Susan Bregman, principal of Oak Square Resources, LLC.

This project is funded by the Transit Cooperative Research Program and staffed by personnel from URS Corporation and Oak Square Resources, LLC.
